East Grinstead has been a Fairtrade Town since 2005, a status conferred by the Fairtrade Foundation. Our Group exists to help maintain this status by raising local awareness of Fairtrade labelled products – including those sold by Traidcraft, encouraging local shops, schools and businesses to sell and stock these, and to represent the Fairtrade movement through church, school and community events. Products with a Fairtrade logo support decent working conditions, fair terms of trade for farmers and workers – local helping global.
Fairtrade EG has the support of its Town Council and its members are involved with local presentations and activities during Fairtrade Fortnight which takes annually in February/March. Meetings are held quarterly.
During Fairtrade Fortnight 2020 Fairtrade EG organised a Fairtrade Teddy Trail throughout the town, held a stall selling Fairtrade goods and information in EG Library, and put on a Quiz and Charity meal with another charity at the Ghurka Woodcock Restaurant. This latter event raised £500 for Traidcraft Exchange which brings people together to fight injustice in trade in order to create sustainable solutions to poverty. Fairtrade activities also took place in local Fairtrade schools and churches.
